SoMa House San Francisco: Experience The Bay Lights on the Bay Bridge
One of San Francisco’s most beloved pieces of public art is returning to the city skyline. The Bay Lights, an iconic LED light installation on the western span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge created by artist Leo Villareal, will once again illuminate the night in early spring 2026. This dazzling light sculpture transforms the bridge into a sweeping work of art that captivates locals and visitors alike.
SoMa House offers a perfect downtown home base for guests eager to see this spectacular light installation. Whether you’re planning a spring getaway, a romantic evening walk along the Embarcadero, or a night drive past the glowing bridge, a stay downtown puts you close to it all.
About The Bay Lights
The Bay Lights first debuted in 2013 as a dynamic public art installation composed of thousands of LED lights strung across the vertical cables of the Bay Bridge’s western span. Designed by light artist Leo Villareal, the installation displays abstract, algorithmic patterns that shift, shimmer, and dance through the night.
Although the original lights were turned off in 2023 after a decade of nightly illumination, an extensive $11 million restoration project has brought the iconic artwork back for a new chapter. The newly rebuilt installation will debut in a grand lighting event on March 20, 2026, with 48,000 custom LEDs engineered to withstand the Bay’s coastal elements and ensure long-lasting nightly displays from dusk until dawn.
How to Enjoy The Bay Lights During Your Visit
While the bridge is visible from many points around the Bay Area, the most dramatic views are along the San Francisco waterfront near the Embarcadero and Ferry Building. After sunset, a stroll along the promenade offers a beautiful perspective, especially as the lights come alive against the backdrop of the Bay and city skyline.
If you’re planning a scenic dinner or a night out, many visitors pair Bay Lights viewing with a walk along Pier 7, a ride on the historic F Market streetcar, or a waterfront dinner with views of the bridge across the water.
